Define Humanities

Humanities are the studies of the things that make people people. Humans become people through their creation and understanding language, art, philosophy, etc. Humans think of themselves as above other animals, and this elevation of our personhood comes from our appreciation of things higher than ourselves. To study the humanities is to improve one’s self through improving understanding of what makes one a human, to learn to better appreciate these unique and important things about ourselves. The Humanities are a process because no one will ever come to a complete understanding of what it means to be human, so there will always be room to understand and learn more about humanness. There is no clear start or end to studying the humanities, doing so is a nonlinear process.  Humanities are the effort to better understand what makes a human being a person, such as things like art, music, society, philosophy, etc. in order to best understand ourselves.
